History of the Uconnect Infotainment Platform

The Uconnect system marked a new era in FCA’s in-vehicle technology, evolving from the early MyGIG foundations into a modern, connected infotainment suite. Each generation introduced major improvements in performance, usability, and integration—shaping the seamless multimedia experience found in today’s Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat vehicles.

MyGig (2007-2010)

Before the Uconnect lineup, FCA-Chrysler introduced the MyGIG system — its first true touchscreen-based infotainment platform. MyGIG combined entertainment, navigation, and storage features in one interface and laid the foundation for all future Uconnect systems. Models like the RER, REN, REW, and REP featured a 6.5-inch touchscreen, optional navigation, and hard drive storage for music and media. The RER included full navigation with HDD and Sirius satellite radio, while the REN offered a non-navigation option. Compared to earlier radios, MyGIG introduced significant advancements such as built-in media storage, DVD playback, and early Bluetooth and voice command support.

MyGig Uconnect (2011-2020)

The RHR, RHB, and RBZ radios represented Chrysler’s advanced MyGIG and early Uconnect lineup, each tailored for different levels of functionality. The RHR served as the high-end model, featuring built-in HDD navigation, Sirius satellite radio with Travel Link, Bluetooth connectivity, voice command, and a 30GB hard drive for music and media storage. The RHB offered Garmin-based navigation without a hard drive, providing faster performance and simplified operation while retaining Bluetooth, Sirius radio, USB, and rear camera support. The RBZ, also known as the Media Center 430, was the non-navigation version designed primarily for entertainment, offering AM/FM radio, CD/DVD playback, USB and AUX inputs, optional Bluetooth, and internal storage for media. All three units shared a 6.5-inch touchscreen interface.

Uconnect 2 (2011-2013)

The RB5 radio was a premium Uconnect unit introduced in select Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat vehicles during the early 2010s, positioned as a high-end multimedia and navigation system. It featured built-in HDD navigation, Sirius satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, and voice command integration. The RB5 also included USB and AUX inputs, rear camera support, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with improved graphics and faster performance compared to earlier MyGIG units.

Uconnect 3 (2013-2017)

With Uconnect 3, FCA completely redesigned its infotainment system both in hardware and software. Powered by the QNX operating system, this generation offered faster processing, a modern interface, and larger capacitive touchscreens. It supported Bluetooth streaming, text messaging, integrated apps, and SiriusXM. Navigation was available on the RA4 (8.4-inch) and RE2 (6.5-inch) models, while non-navigation versions included the RA3 (8.4-inch) and RA2 (5-inch). Compared to Uconnect 2, this generation was a major leap in usability, performance, and visual design—moving away from MyGIG’s layout to a fully connected infotainment experience.

Uconnect 4 (2018-2021)

The Uconnect 4 generation brought substantial performance gains and modern smartphone integration. It introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and improved voice recognition. Navigation-equipped versions included the UAQ (8.4-inch) and UAV (8.4-inch), while non-navigation models such as the UAS, UAM, and UAA(5-inch) offered similar functionality without built-in navigation. Compared to Uconnect 3, this platform delivered noticeably faster boot times, enhanced graphics, and support for over-the-air (OTA) updates. Screen sizes were available in both 5-inch and 8.4-inch variants.

Uconnect 5 (2021-2025)

Introduced alongside the formation of Stellantis in 2021, Uconnect 5 represents a complete transformation of FCA’s infotainment system. Built on Android Automotive OS, it delivers up to five times faster performance than Uconnect 4 and adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa integration, and multi-screen support for the instrument cluster, center, and passenger displays. Navigation-equipped models include the UBL and UBQ, while entry-level variants omit built-in navigation. The system also supports over-the-air updates and cloud-based user profiles. Depending on the model, screen sizes range from 8.4 inches to 12 inches, offering a flexible and highly connected user experience across Stellantis vehicles.
